Threesomes

At one time, the term “threesome” simply meant a trio of people, but as sexual mores loosened in the 1960s, the word’s definition began to drift. “Threesome,” in reference to the sex act, came into popular use around 1972. (It got a solid boost in pop culture when Woody Allen used the word in the Oscar-winning 1977 movie Annie Hall.) Porn movies, ever eager to appropriate any and all sexcapades for use in on-screen action, were quick to incorporate the theme into the repertoire. (The erotically charged 1972 Danish movie Threesome proved to be so controversial that it was actually seized by customs when it first arrived in the United States. Thankfully, no such cultural and legal restrictions prevent threesome movies from being widely released today!)

While they can sometimes prove challenging to shoot, threesomes have been the theme of some of the most popular porn movies ever released. Threesome Fantasies Fulfilled debuted in June 2013 and quickly became a fixture on Adult Empire’s bestseller charts. From 2015 through 2017, it never fell lower than #49 on AE’s current bestsellers, except at moments when it was been so popular it fell completely out of stock. The genre has even stepped out of the shadows and into mainstream media in recent years, thanks to high-profile shows such as House of Cards and Girls, both of which have incorporated threesome scenes into their storylines.
