Interview with TJ Hart - April 3, 2002
On the Set Of "Paradise Lost" in Los Angeles, CA
Q: Can you tell us a little about how you got started in the industry?
TJ: I was a bartender in Colorado...
Q: Did you grow up there?
TJ: I went to college there, and I was on the US swim team... that's where they practice. A big drag queen, Chi Chi LaRue, was performing one night at the bar where I was working and found me and said I'd be great for his movie... so they flew me out here and I did my first movie.
Q: So you were discovered bartending in Colorado?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: Had you done anything before?
TJ: No. I hadn't even danced before.
Q: What was the pitch? How did he ask you?
TJ: Actually, I was in severe divorce debt. My husband left me with all the credit card debt and I was bartending and teaching second grade and I just could not pay the bills. So I was like "well, god, I haven't dated all of Colorado, so this is a way to make sure I get sex and not have the psychos that get attached to you." It was fun. I don't know how to go out to a club and pick up a guy and just have sex with him. I'm shy that way. [laughs]
Q: Do you have a boyfriend now?
TJ: Not really. There's a guy I like... but he lives in Nashville.
Q: Have you had boyfriends since you've been involved in the industry?
TJ: No. There's a guy I liked for the past three years and he's pretty much the only one I worked with last year.
Q: So if you like someone...
TJ: Then I only work with him, [smiles] yeah... but it's stupid, I learned my lesson to never fall in love with a guy that works in the business.
Q: Didn't turn out good for you?
TJ: No. [laughs]
Q: So, Nashville... do you travel a lot?
TJ: I do travel and he travels too with his job.
Q: Is he in the industry?
TJ: He plays ice hockey.
Q: Oh, different industry altogether.
TJ: Yeah. I like him and I can't really tell... he probably doesn't like me, who knows? You know how some people are like "Oh guess what I'm doing... you wanna see the pornstar?" I'm not sure. But I have fun with him. It's nice.
Q: Did you ever think about working out of the industry or do you like being in it?
TJ: I'm actually trying to work out of the business right now. I'm going to start featuring, which I have not done yet. I have to learn how to do it. I have to find the person who's going to represent me. I was in ballet when I was young, so I'm not too worried about being on stage. I think I can do it.
Q: Are you going to get an agent?
TJ: I guess. I don't know. I haven't really looked into it. This is something I'm going to start doing because the one guy I wanted to work with all the time I don't work with now?I don't even want to be on set with him. It's hard to be in this business now. I did it because I really enjoyed it... and right now... I mean, I haven't done a scene in five months, so...
Q: How long ago did you leave Colorado?
TJ: Four years.
Q: And you were in school before that?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: Did you finish?
TJ: Yes. I have a triple major in psychology, sociology, and art with a in early childhood education.
Q: And then you went into teaching?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: And you turned your back on teaching to pay the bills? Any intention of going back?
TJ: I've actually tried to go back into teaching again, but when they bring up your social security number they know you've worked for adult companies and they won't hire you.
Q: Really? It's impossible?
TJ: Yeah. It's impossible. They think that just because we do this we're pedophiles... and that's not true. In fact, I've never met a in this business yet. But they're everywhere, so it's not like I can say they're not here. But they're just as much in the real world as they are in the porn fantasy world. People just have their preconceived notions.
Q: So have you taken heat elsewhere?
TJ: Actually yeah. I applied to the gaming commission in Vegas, and they just turned me down because of this... because this is illegal in a lot of states... y'know, getting paid for sex. A lot of people know it's acting, but if you get down to it we are getting paid for sex and that's illegal.
Q: So do you enjoy doing it or is it acting? Is it a job?
TJ: It's not a job for me, that's my problem. I give my heart away every time I do it. It's not an acting thing for me. I actually really enjoy doing it and I forget that there's other people there. I zone out so much. I think it goes back to when I swam and I wouldn't hear the audience. I wouldn't even know there was anybody else in the water with me. Now that I get naked and have sex, I forget that there's anyone else around me. I just zone onto the guy.
Q: So you haven't done that many actual movies with different guys.
TJ: No, not that many different guys. Everybody here, actually, I've had sex with and that's pretty much it.
Q: Do you end up working with a specific company? Do you book it yourself?
TJ: Yes, I book it myself. I'm my own agent for movies. Mostly last year I only worked K-Beech Video and Wicked and that's it. There's a company I wanted to sign a contract with but they haven't come back to me yet. That would mean I'd only have to do three movies a year instead of twelve or twenty.
Q: Do you do a lot of promotions and publicity?
TJ: If you sign a contract there's great promotions and publicity, which I would love to do. I think I'd be good at that. I'm good at helping and not just sitting on my ass. Not just when the company says "do this" or "do that," but I would actually be doing a lot on my own as long as I had some guidelines from them. We'll see what happens.
Q: Do you go to conventions and trade shows?
TJ: No, I've never done any. The one thing I did last summer was Erotica LA.
Q: So it's not a business thing for you, you got into it to...
TJ: ...to pay off my settlement... and to have sex.
Q: Because you weren't into going out and meeting some guy at a club.
TJ: Yeah, and this is actually a safe way of doing it because we're all tested. And, to be honest, we all really do with each other and that's it. It's not a family, but it is a family. It's a family in that we kind of stay with each other because we know we're all safe and tested, but then you still get that catty stuff. The high school stuff... all the little rumors.
Q: So do you all hang out together outside? Is it like just sex and then you have your friends on the outside of it?
TJ: We have our friends, but mostly all of us are in the business. We have friends that maybe work for the company or something and that don't actually do the adult video... and we have our friends outside... and it's not like we all go to a bar and hang out, but my best friend is Sydnee Steele and we'll go and hang out in a beach part of Malibu in our sweats. But every once in awhile you need a booty call and you can just call one of the guys that doesn't have a girlfriend and you know you're safe.
Q: Is there a lot of sex outside of the shoots?
TJ: I wouldn't say there's a lot of sex, because the guys work a lot and they can't really have a booty call one night and then go to a set at nine o'clock in the morning and expect to do two or three scenes that day. We do what we can. There's other things I do besides sex now.
Q: Do you do print or photo stuff?
TJ: I've never done any print stuff. I would like to try it just to see what it's like. I've found a couple of places and... I don't know... there's just so many girls... unless you're very persistent and just bother the shit out of them... that's probably the only way you get it... or if you're Cindy Crawford looking... something unusual...
Q: Is there a barrier between cast and crew? I was just talking to the art director and apparently he's a rocket scientist and built the patriot missiles and shot down scuds... pretty interesting guy. Do the cast and crew hang out off set too or just cast with cast and crew with crew?
TJ: Actually yeah, we hang out with the crew, too. A lot of the girls do date crewmembers, because they know that for some?well, most , I guess?for most people in the business the sex isn't real. They do it, get paid, and leave. But yeah, we all hang out, they're great guys. They know, unlike the other part of the world, that we do need some respect. I mean, yeah, the audience watches it, but the crew films it and they know what goes on. They know we're not doing , we're not getting , we're not being idiots and having sex in bathrooms before our scenes. Everyone thinks it's one big orgy.
Q: What has it been like for you in terms of other people's perceptions of your job... like family members and old friends?
TJ: Actually, the way society views porn people... they think it's all like Boogie Nights... that we're all doing stuff like that. [laughs] To be honest, yeah, there are parties like that, but they're called After Midnight Parties and they're mainstream people... they're teachers and whoever and every once in a while we'll go to them just to watch real people have sex and have fun. So there are parties like that, they're just not really developed by the porn industry. They're developed by real people who are trying to let go.
Q: Have you had problems with your family's perception?
TJ: Yeah, actually my sister-in-law found out. She told my parents without coming to me first and asking me. That's why I'm a little pissed off about it.
Q: How long ago was that?
TJ: Last August... and then she wouldn't let me near my nephew or niece, saying that I'll them. And I'm like "excuse me, you've known me for how long?" I mean, why would I want to a child when I can have an adult? I don't know, I don't get that. And she says "well, I'm being protective" and I ask "so all of a sudden you know about my job and I'm a different person now?" I'm the same person I've been forever.
Q: Is she older or younger?
TJ: Younger, but she married my brother, who's older.
Q: How about your parents?
TJ: Actually, they've been really cool.
Q: How's your brother about it?
TJ: Y'know, most brothers are like "aargh, my sister having sex," he doesn't want to know about it. It probably disappointed him a little, because he wanted more for me in life. But he just doesn't really talk about it. My sister-in-law stupidly asked me a question... I said I'd never lie about anything so she asked me if I'd ever been with a girl. That's the thing that flipped out my brother. He was like "okay, that's it!" Because probably all guys have their fantasies about girls with girls, but they don't want to think about their sister in that context. So that just flipped him out and he left the room.
Q: So how do you talk with him about it... is he imagining the world's biggest gangbang?
TJ: Oh no, I would never do that. I don't think that's sexual. I mean, I like to do two guys... two guys are fun. Just like a guy would like two girls.
Q: So where do you draw the line? If you book this yourself, do you get all the info beforehand of what you'll be doing?
TJ: Oh yeah, when you book the deal and get the price, because prices are all different. If you do it yourself, you can control it yourself?you ask exactly what's going. I tell them I won't do cumshots in the face. Then they'll say "okay, then we can't use you" or "we can use you." It's pretty much set up beforehand. "Do you do anal," "do you do whatever?" So it's like "yeah yeah yeah... I'll do that... I'll do that... oh, I won't do that."
Q: And then it's just business?
TJ: It's just business, yeah... [thoughtfully] yeah... and then it's like "who will you work with and who not?" There are some people I won't work with.
Q: Have you ever had serious problems with anyone?
TJ: Actually, a girl did not show up on time for one of the movies I did last year, so they hired a new girl to come in. I don't want to work with anyone under the age of 21... I just don't think you should be in the business until you're 21, because you haven't lived life yet. So I come on to the set and there's this girl?and, first of all, she didn't bring a test so I'm like "I won't work with her." So they got a test faxed over and I was like "okay." In the middle of my scene, one of the director?whom I dislike more than life itself because he had just called me fat anyway?
Q: On the set?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: What the hell is that all about??
TJ: He was just a mean person. So he goes "hey, why don't you tell TJ about prom last year." I threw up after the scene. It made me so sick that this girl was 18 years old. I'm sorry, yes, she is considered an adult... but she's not lived life and she doesn't understand that this is pretty much going to ruin her regular life. You can't date normally again. You're not going to find a real normal guy that has a real job, because most men just can't handle the thought of their woman fucking another guy and their friends watching it. If you think about it, their friends are watching their girl fuck another guy and give him a blowjob and do all this intimate stuff. Most men can't handle that. When you first get in you don't realize that. You think "oh, no one will recognize me" or "it's no big deal, I'll find a guy who's really cool guy who can handle it."
Q: How is it on the other side? How would you feel if you were dating a guy and his friends had your videos? Would you care?
TJ: A little bit, because I don't want them to give him a hard time. I'm not concerned about myself... because I did it. It's just something I did. I love sex. I'm very open minded. I'm like, "Who cares? Everyone has sex, animals have sex." But guys, for some reason, they're socialized from the beginning that women shouldn't do that. In other countries guys'll have mistresses that will give them blowjobs because they believe the mouths that kiss their children should not suck dick. So I feel bad because the guy would get fucked with for it. Every time you try to have a normal relationship, their friends will start jabbing at them... going, "Yeah you shoulda seen her take it in the ass."
Q: Have you had that experience personally with a guy whose friends fucked with him about it?
TJ: Well, I was trying to date somebody that was a mainstream producer?he produced some really, really big movies?and we could never go out because he would get harassed for it. He didn't need that at the time, his parents were really sick... they've both died now... but he's moved on to somebody else... that's why I'm worried about this guy I'm dating that's in Nashville. I thought he was far enough away that it would be okay, but I've got a queer feeling that it's everywhere.
Q: Have you been in anything else besides adult films?
TJ: I've done some B-movies. Do you remember Dwayne Wayne from "A Different World"? I did a movie with him and the Doritos chick... I did that and that's how I got into SAG. I've done a few little things.
Q: Have you ever thought about just going back to bartending?
TJ: Well, I'm still in divorce debt. This business does not make as much money as you'd think.
Q: The business doesn't or you don't? Or both?
TJ: Both. We still have to buy new clothes... we have to buy new underwear?underwear is not cheap?shoes, makeup, we have to have our hair done...
Q: So you're responsible for your own wardrobe?
TJ: Yeah, usually. It's unusual to have a movie like this where they have wardrobe for us. And we also need clothes for signing, because we're going to have to go sign and promote ourselves. It costs 40 bucks every month for nails... you have to get your face peeled... hair colored... extensions... it's just not as cheap as everyone thinks.
Q: Do you have a website?
TJ: Not yet, I actually got ripped off. I gave a guy all my content and money and... I'm not sure where he is now. Somewhere... [laughs]
Q: Did you have a contract with him?
TJ: Yeah, but if you can't find the person...
Q: Yeah... that sucks.
TJ: But I'm gonna get one. I have everything in my house to get one. And I have Web City, so I can design it. I have a digital camera already. Just need somebody to put it together...
Q: So you wanna put the whole thing together yourself? Are you going to sell stuff?
TJ: Yeah. I'll sell my underwear that I've used... and toys... and videos... whatever they'd like.... there are some weird people out there!
Q: Have you run into weird fans?
TJ: Actually, I had a stalker two years ago... I had to move.
Q: Did the police help you out or were they weird about it?
TJ: Well, I called the police. It took them 45 minutes to get to my house... the guy was walking around my house for 15 minutes, pounding on all my doors at 10:30 at night.
Q: Oh my god!
TJ: And I live up in the hills, so it's really dark up there... there's no light... it's scary. Finally when the police arrived?my friends who live 40 minutes away got there before the police did?I was walking out and they looked at me and were like "oh!" and I'm like "yeah, I'm a blonde, green-eyed semi-attractive girl, and there's this big guy walking around my house slamming on my windows." I'm like "thanks for coming as fast as you could..." I was a little upset about that. And I got carjacked right before that...
Q: Oh my god!
TJ: The police... ok, first of all they couldn't find my car even though I was going down a highway. And I got run over by the car, too... which was really great. Ok, and...
Q: Ok wait?what?
TJ: I was in a gas station at 10:30 in the morning.
Q: 10:30 in the morning?
TJ: Yeah. Just to put gas in my car, but I was waiting in line. So I pulled up, I leaned out of the car to throw some garbage out, and the guy came up behind me and hit me over the head with a pipe. And I turned around and started hitting him, like get the hell out of my car! Well, I grabbed on to him, about to hit him on the neck?a good place to hit a guy is in the Adam's Apple?and he put the car in reverse, and it knocked me off and the door slammed on my arm and dragged me and the wheels turned and ran over my legs. And I'm sitting there...
Q: Do you have insurance?
TJ: Oh yeah, well that takes forever too, you know? It sucks.
Q: Do you have to pay for your own insurance, or is that part of the deal that the pictures pay for?
TJ: Yeah. Paid for by work. The police found my car three weeks later and they found the guy. One of the other guys got his legs chopped off because he was going over the hill, following his friend, and he jackknifed into a telephone pole. So they got his friend. The guy in my car got away, but they found him. Supposedly he got ten years, but I don't know because I was supposed to go to the court case, but on the day I went to the court they had to postpone it, because the one guy wasn't off the respirator yet. They never called me again. I was really pissed, because I wanted to be there and just smile at the guy and just be like "I hope you get yours," he was Mexican and I wanted to say "I hope you get sent back to Mexico." I'm sorry, but why should my tax dollars pay for an illegal immigrant to go to jail and get schooling, food, and a semi-safe place... I mean, I know it's not safe in jail, but it is semi-safe there. It makes me mad. So, I got my car back, that was good. I love Colorado. [laughs] I miss it.

Pornstarempire.com: Where are you from?
TJ: I'm from Boulder, Colorado. I live in LA now. I moved there three years ago.
Q: How did you get started in adult? Did you start with dancing?
TJ: Actually, no, I haven't danced yet. Actually I was bartending in Colorado and a big drag queen, named Chi Chi LaRue, who I love, found me and got me in my first movie. ...He directs a lot of movies....
Q: Do you prefer to work with men or women?
TJ: I definitely prefer to work with men. But I like it when I work with women and they can tell me what to do and I can actually get them excited or get them to come, because women are very new to me. I like just to make people feel good.
Q: Were you bisexual before porn?
TJ: No. ...I was scared to death [when I shot my first scene with a girl] because the guy I had just stopped dating at the time came in three hours early, cause I was supposed do a scene with him. He came in early to watch me do my first girl and I was so mad and angry and just upset.... He just wanted to make me feel uncomfortable. But I got through it just fine cause I was with my very good friend, Tina Tyler.... I'm just a very sexual person; I just want everyone to feel good. And I don't really think [of it] as men or women anymore.
Q: So now you would definitely say that you were bisexual at this point?
TJ: Sexual.... Pansexual, asexual, bi-everything!
Q: Does sex onscreen ever feel like an intimate experience?
TJ: Actually, it does feel like an intimate experience, because last year I mostly worked with one guy and I gave way too much of myself to him.... It was very intimate all last year. ...I met him at the CES show.... He was married at the time...but once he got divorced, I just wanted to work with him all the time, and he wanted to be friends and I just, you know, gave my heart away.
Q: And you're not gonna tell us who this is?
TJ: No, but I mean, please. Every guy that I was with...in the year 2000 is the same guy so...figure it out.
Q: How would say your relationships are with other girls on the set and would you say you come from similar backgrounds?
TJ: ...My relationships are always good because I...tend to mother people a lot. I wanna make sure everybody is okay; everybody has everything.... We come from so many different backgrounds; I come form a corporate family.... A country club family.... It's really neat that we [the porn community] can all get together and have one common thing....
Q: Would you tell me a little bit more about growing up?
TJ: I grew up on a country club-a river in my backyard...pretty much had everything to my disposal, but I pushed it all away cause I wanted to do things on my own. I went to college, had a triple major. It was a very unsexual family that I had, very corporate, business, and I'm totally opposite of all of them. I love feelings, I love touching, I love giving emotion....
Q: You feel like the adult business has given you a place where you can express yourself more openly?
TJ: ...It's given me a place where I can express myself more sexually cause as a child, I was never allowed to, cause wasn't right to do till you got married. It's so neat to be able to experience stuff in a safe environment cause we're all tested.... You know what you're getting into before you get in. ...I think it's very healthy.
Q: How common is it for porn chicks to be lovers?
TJ: I think it's very common...but they get more jealous. Cause one might get more work than the other...it's more competative....
Q: So what did I do to you last night?
TJ: I guess it's for everyone in the bathroom and those beautiful little hands of yours to try to remember.
Q: Wow! Can you watch yourself on film?
TJ: Actually, I've only watched myself once on film, cause it's the first time I came and I just wanted to see what I did...cause for some reason, I just all let go....
Q: How old were you?
TJ: It was like five months ago.
Q: So obviously, you had your first orgasm relatively late in life, so why do you think that is?
TJ: Probably because that's the one last thing that I had to give to somebody, and I was kinda saving that one for marriage...for someone I could really give my whole soul to and it kinda just slipped out there....
Q: So you still thought that you would not have an orgasm till marriage, even after you started porn?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: Aw, don't lie.
TJ: Yeah, I'd been having sex for a good ten years. ...I'd been able to hold it back since then.
Q: And you thought that you could fuck for a living and not have orgasms?! ...You just planned to fake them?
TJ: I faked them my whole life [giggles]. ...I faked it for two and a half years. It still feels good. ...I love giving pleasure. ...I love making love... when a guy does that low, little moan right before they come, that's like my most favorite thing in the whole world....
Q: If you were having sex...at home and you didn't have an orgasm, you wouldn't eventually feel frustrated?
TJ: No. I get only frustrated if the other person doesn't come....
Q: I think the therapist would have a ball with that. Do porn guys suck at sex, because somebody told me that.
TJ: Some guys do. ...It's too over the top. They try kissing with their mouths open and too much slime-and too much long tongue. I'm sorry, I like my clit like bitten and sucked a little, but you can't do that on film because the camera can't see it. But if you have sex with them off screen, they do the exact same thing.... Some guys are good and they love their job. But some guys do it because they like the money they need...the Viagra every scene. I don't work with those cause it makes me feel bad, like why can't you find a part of my body that excites you...?
Q: ...How has your dating life changed since you've been in the business?
TJ: ...I've tried dating people in the mainstream, like in real life...it kind of sucks because they keep trying to go, "Hey, bring some of your girlfriends for my friends," and they don't want to really get to know me, they just want to know me as a pornstar. ...And I'm so much different than a porn chick.
Q: And what did you think you were gonna do, like in college?
TJ: I have a triple major in psychology, sociology and art with a in early childhood education. Right before I was in the business, actually I was working with children with learning disabilities....
Q: So what did you think in your head? You're this normal girl with this country club upbringing...and some drag queen comes in and says, "Come take off your clothes and fuck on film," and you're like, "Okay!"?
TJ: No. It took a long time...to say yes.
Q: Back to lesbianism: you're less inclined to date a guy from the business at this point, right? Do you feel the same about women?
TJ: I would definitely date a woman more than a guy right now, since my little heart was broken. ...It's more the inside than the outside with a woman.
Q: You think you could ever marry a woman?
TJ: Yeah. ...I want like that soul mate.... I don't care if it's a man or a woman. If you get along with somebody like that, then you belong together.
Q: ...What would you like to do sexually onscreen that you haven't yet?
TJ: I don't know. I've not done interracial yet. I might wanna try that. I'm working over a little fear that happened when I was 16. ...I got stabbed and when I was 16 by five black guys.
Q: So doesn't everybody say that that's why you're doing...[porn]?
TJ: No! Then I'd be doing black guys, wouldn't I?
Q: But that you had a sexual trauma-
TJ: The thing is, it's an anger trauma. I don't see it as a sexual..... I just got mistaken for somebody else's girlfriend in downtown Chicago. Being ...has nothing to do with sex....
Q: Did your family know about...[the ]?
TJ: Yeah. ...They blamed me for being a girl.
Q: They blamed you for being out?
TJ: Yeah.
Q: Wow. How many movies have you been in?
TJ: Over a hundred. A lot in Europe...for the first year. I lived in Budapest. I love it. Budapest is beautiful. If you ever have a chance to go....
Q: Who are your favorite people to work with?
TJ: Chloe and Tina Tyler Laura Montgomery and Kylie Ireland and Mark Davis Shane Collins.... I kinda like working with everyone, cause everyone's different. And fun in their unique way.
Q: What's the latest thing that you've done?
TJ: I'd like to plug "Welcome to Chloeville"-it's the first movie that I came in.... I've done a lot for VCA this year..."Girl Interrupted", "Thighs Wide Open", "White Lightning"....
Q: Anything else you wanna mention?
TJ: No, I'm just gonna let you rack your brain and try to remember how wonderful it was in the restroom last night.
...So classy of me!
