Interview with Stacy Valentine - December 4, 2000
Phone Interview
Pornstarempire.com: How did you get started in the adult business?
Stacy:: I started doing modeling in magazines first. I posed for "Gallery: The Girl Next Door".
Q: Were you still in Oklahoma or were you in LA?
Stacy:: I was still in Oklahoma. I was a housewife. My husband at the time - now my ex - thought that that would be a good way to have a threesome.
Q: Did it work?
Stacy: No,...I never brought him home a woman. I ended up leaving him for the industry. It's totally, "be careful what you wish for", cause he so got it, but not the way he wanted it.
I had a problem with threesomes. You know, it's okay for some people, but my advice for men is: don't bring it up, it needs to be the woman's idea. Because I felt like, "Well, I'm not enough,"
you know? It just wasn't a really great feeling. And he kept pressing the issue. And living in Oklahoma, there aren't a lot of lesbians. ...He had the fantasy - a normal fantasy - to think all photo
shoots are gonna be like the Playboy Mansion, like a bunch of girls running around having tickle fights...in panties.... It's just not so.... He thought that if I posed with someone...I could just say, "Hey,
how would you like to fly back to Oklahoma with me, have sex with my husband - for free - and then fly yourself back home? How 'bout that?"
Q: So this [threesome] idea didn't even appeal to you?
Stacy: No. I was naïve and I take 50 percent responsibility, because I allowed it to happen. ...Fortunately for me, this industry enabled me to get away from him. I don't want to keep talking about him, cause he's so not important.
Q: Just one thing, then - the relationship was not perfect otherwise?
Stacy: No, not at all. He wasn't a nice guy. ...After I posed for "Hustler" and I did a boy/girl and a girl/girl layout, and at the time, Antonio Banderas was red hot and my male model looked like him, he had the long black curly hair...and
I was like, "Oh, my! I think I'm gonna like this!" It was in Mexico, and we were on the beach, and I don't know if it was the magic of Mexico, or with everyone telling me, "Oh, this looks so great!"...Just something inside said, "This is it -
this is what we're gonna do." Stacy Valentine was born right then. ...I told the photographer, If you ever hear of any way I can get into the business - cause I was like, I could do video real easily, cause it was a softcore shoot, but we were doing hardcore -
well, one, I didn't know any better, and two, it was amazing, and I didn't realize how easy it is for a woman to get into the adult business.... About a month later, I got a phone call, and the photographer was like, "How'd you like to go back to Mexico and shoot a movie?"
I was like, "What time's the plane leave?"
Q: So you went back to Oklahoma to your life and then you got the phone call?
Stacy: Yeah, I came back to Oklahoma, without a woman, and...[my husband] was like, I guess that didn't work out,
and so...I told him I was ready to do the movies, cause he had suggested that too. ...At the time I didn't have the confidence...I used to look at pictures and think,
"Oh that's awful, how could she do that?", but now I realize cause I'm older...that was my insecurities....
Q: How did you tell your family about your career?
Stacy: When I called my mom and told her what I was doing she was like, "Well, I guess I can't ground
you and send you to your room".... She said, "Are you safe?" I said, "Yes." She said, "Are ya happy?" I said,
"Very" she said, "Well, that's what I've always hoped for you is to be safe and happy, so...I can't stop you and I'll love you no matter what...."
Q: Maybe she was relieved to see you get away from your husband.
Stacy: Yes,...that too. And now that I'm no longer in the industry, she's very happy as well.
Q: Was your background conservative?
Stacy: Oklahoma is very religious.... Hardcore material is not legal [there].... There's no "Playboys" or "Penthouses" allowed, even if they're covered up.*
Q: Was you family religious - it was really wild for you to do this, right?
Stacy: It was wild, but they're not really religious, but we...[were] in a religious community.
Q: What was your favorite part of having sex onscreen?
Stacy: Everybody watching me. ...Not that I'm paying attention, I'm not looking around at everybody looking at me...I have tunnel vision -
it's me and whoever I'm doing my scene with,...but I think it's swirling around in my head the whole time...how many people are watching and
how many people are going to watch, and the effect it's going to have.... It's a really cool feeling [to have] while I'm having sex with this person.
Q: You found [the sex]...pretty liberating?
Stacy: Absolutely. I had a great time with it.
Q: Did you prefer to perform with men or women?
Stacy: Mainly with men, because my tongue is not very long, and it's hard for me to cheat open to the camera.... Just for that reason alone,
I went more with guys than girls. And I love men. I love women too, but I swing more toward men.
Q: Were you actively bisexual before your movie career?
Stacy: Yeah, I was.
Q: When you were most active making movies, did you get desensitized to sex?
Stacy: Yeah. I think happens to everyone, and if they say they don't, they just haven't come into that yet.
I used to date an adult star...Julian (who's now married to Jill Kelly) and it did get desensitized, because he was
working a lot more than I was, because...men have to work more than women, and the day before he worked, we didn't have sex,
because he needed the pop shot to be good. We couldn't blow dust; we'd heard of other people who had really active sex lives
outside of the industry, and some of them were known to blow dust -
Q: What's "blow dust"?
Stacy: Have a phantom pop shot...not...a whole lot comes out.... We didn't want that to happen, so the day before, we just wouldn't have sex....
Also, when we would have sex, it's almost like we would get into a position, like as if there were a camera. I remember saying one time,
"You know, there's no camera back there!" And we were just laughing, because we're so programmed...to have have your leg up, to have like a
good angle so that the camera to come in and get that shot -
Q: To "cheat open"?
Stacy: To cheat open!
Q: What did you feel was your best asset onscreen?
Stacy: I would say, blowjobs, loved giving blowjobs.... And eye contact while
your giving a blowjob - that blows a man's mind.
Q: What would you say your favorite shoot was?
Stacy: My favorite scene - I never saw it...was "Nasty Nymphos 13".
It's a Gonzo, an Annabolic. It was first time to work with Mark Davis,
who's my absolute favorite to work with. It was a DP with Mark Davis, Vince Voyeur and myself.
Q: Who were your favorite performers to work with?
Stacy: Mark Davis, absolutely.... He's the best-looking and the most solid wood
in the industry. I mean, and he's so nice, he's just so great - somebody that
attractive you would think would be cocky, and arrogant and he's not.... He's such a pleasure to
be around.... He's just so hot. He's just so amazing - everybody loves him, cameramen - everyone -
cause he gives like a sixty second countdown, and then like a ten second countdown. He never misses a shot -
he's never had wood problems, he's never had pop shot problems - he's perfect.
Q: And female-wise?
Stacy: Sydney Steele. ...Not only is she beautiful and sexy and very sensual, she's a great person.
I hang out with her more than anyone. I've traveled with her, we went to South Africa for two weeks and shot
two movies for VCA. Had an amazing time. And we've gone to Barcelona together and anybody who's seen any of her scenes knows how hot she is.
Q: What did you want to be when you were little?
Stacy: I really never had much of a - I was raised to be a housewife.
Q: What are your interests, hobbies and such?
Stacy: I like to hang out at the gym, of course, go shopping. I'm addicted to the computer. The internet is fascinating....
My brain is like a sponge right now, I crave knowledge. ...It really is, "Where do you wanna go today?" - I research anywhere
from dolphins to the Aurora Borealis.... I'm really obsessed with that.
Q: Are you single now?
Stacy: I have a boyfriend.
Q: If you have children, will you tell them about your adult career?
Stacy: Absolutely, but I will not tell them until they're older, because I don't feel
it's appropriate to talk about sex...with young children. After they're 18 if they wanna see something,
I guess I can't stop it, I'm certainly not gonna say, "Here, take a look at this", either. But as far as always being open,
I think that when you start trying to hide things - I'll never hide my past... People ask me if I tell now, or try to keep it a secret,
and I say absolutely not, cause I'm not ashamed of what I did. I'm so happy - I wouldn't change anything, not one little thing, because
I wouldn't be where I am now.... I found the man that I'm probably gonna marry - I mean, he's amazing - and if I would have altered one little thing in my past,
I wouldn't have met him.
Q: But he's not in the business.
Stacy: No, he's a stock broker.
Q: How would you describe your experience with James Avalon...?
Stacy: James Avalon is an amazing director. I had the honor of working with him a handful of times. His vision -
I totally trust him - anything that he ever told me to do, I didn't question...I just did it. And...with that trust,
he got more out of me and I was able to give him what he needed. He's got some really far out ideas, but once you see them onscreen,
everything comes together. And his music doesn't suck - it's great.
Q: Do you wanna get more specific about what he was able to get you to do? Are you talking more about the acting -
Stacy: I'm talking more about like the visuals and the acting - there's one,..."Sexy Nurses 3", which was a really bizarre movie -
the boxcover's got fish sitting on a needle on like a shot.... That's far out enough, but the whole movie, you just have to see it to know
what I'm talking about. I can't even describe it, just check it out.
Q: I was just watching "Red Vibe Diaries" [Object of Desire], and I wanted to ask you if a masturabation scene was harder to do than a two-person scene.
Stacy: Actually, that masturbation scene wasn't very hard to do, because Vince was sitting right there staring at me the whole time, and that was really hot cause
he's a very attractive man. I think we had sex right after that...and then I had Misty Rain, and I could look at her too. That scene went off, no problem.
Q: How do you think you got so uninhibited, just having this normal life and then, BOOM?
Stacy: I really don't know. I think I attribute it to having this alter-ego, "Stacy Valentine".... Stacy Valentine doesn't get headaches, she's not in a bad mood - now,
myself, that's something else. When Stacy Valentine leaves me, that's when everything settles back in. If I had a headache before, it comes back. I think I'm just able to
have an outgoing lifestyle like that, playing a part....
Q: Did you enjoy the acting? I thought you were good at it. Have you done any mainstream?
Stacy: No. I didn't have any experience at all. Actually at the beginning, I didn't want to do any acting -
I was like, yeah yeah yeah, let's get get this over with, so we can get onto the sex. And that was fun for the first couple of years...but [then]...I wanted something more,
cause I had mastered the sex - the positions and all the techniques...so I wanted to add...the acting, which was challenging, and I'm really not very comfortable with it.
We don't get coached or we don't get our lines months in advance, we don't have anybody to help us with it. ...People make fun of the acting so much - and I do too - [but]
some people don't take the time to think we just walk onscreen, and sometimes you don't even get to rehearse it.
Q: Please tell me something about the documentary, "The Girl Next Door: from Housewife to Porn Star", because I've never seen it and it sounds like a great idea.
Stacy: "The Girl Next Door" is a documentary, filmed by a woman. She does women's issues,...Christine Fugate. She's actually done documentaries for PBS before....
She wanted to see what it was like,...the adult business through a woman's perspective. ...It follows me...over two years and in the beginning, it was only supposed to be for a
year, but my career just kept climbing and she kept saying, "Well I can't stop filming now, I gotta get this." But after a while, sometime, you just gotta cut the chord....
They interviewed over forty adult stars and they were looking for someone that the audience could relate to in some way...one of the girls in handcuffs at night. I can't even relate to that, and I'm a porn star.
Q: What is this movie rated?
Stacy: It's not X.
Q: It's R?
Stacy: Yeah. It's been all over the states. It was limited release because it was blown up to 16 [mm] instead of 35. ...Plus the subject.
And there's no hardcore in the movie.... She cheats everything...[visually] so that there's no hardcore, because that would seriously limit us. ...
It's gone all over the world. I was just on "Entertainment Tonight" last week... I've been on "Entertainment Tonight" like six times with the documentary. They really love it.
Q: Why are you retiring?
Stacy: I decided to retire after four years because I did everything that I wanted to do. And when you get to the top of the ladder and you look down and look around, the next place to step
is down. ...I fought really hard to get up there. I received the awards, I was a contract girl, I had really great movies and projects and...there's no need in hogging the spotlight for too long.
I had it.... I had an amazing time, and I appreciate everything that I got and after a while it's time to step aside and let somebody else up there. Cause it's an amazing feeling to be at the top.
I think more people deserve to be there. Some people just won't let it go. I just think that's very selfish.
Q: What are your plans?
Stacy: I have a clothing line and I'm going back to college and I'm moving to New York [City]. ...It's really cool. It's quite an adjustment for me, from living in San Diego -
Q: But it's so exciting, huh?
Stacy: Yeah, it is. And I've found a really great guy, so he's worth it.
Q: Where did you meet him?
Stacy: In San Diego. My neighbor's brother came to visit him. My neighbor said, "You know, you should hang out with
Stacy, she's really nice," and so they came down, the brother and his wife and he and I went out for dinner.
We hung out, and he was just a nice guy and he was really normal...and so not LA - which I appreciate - and we just
hit it off really well...and we have a lot of fun. So I'm gonna hang on to him.
Q: Are you going to Vegas in January [for the awards]?
Stacy: No. I'm not. I don't know that that atmosphere was ever too good for me - seeing all those girls - lucky girls -
that are all Barbie-thin like that. I mean, I'm a curvy girl. And there was rarely a time back then that I wasn't starving
myself or flirting with an eating disorder. So, yeah, I think I'll be here.
